The 12-million-reach co-promo that started with a laptop brand
Between October 2017 and August 2018 I ran business development at Alternativa Games in Perm. The single cleanest win of that year was a co-promotion with two hardware brands, Canyon and Prestigio, that ended up with our branding in large retail chains across more than 30 cities and a total campaign reach north of 12 million people. Here's how it came together.
The partner stack underneath
The co-promo didn't come from nowhere. It sat on top of a revenue-share partner network I'd been building: more than a dozen platforms, among them VK.com, Miniclip, Kongregate, OK.ru, Armor Games, and Spilgames. A new promo strategy on those partners alone delivered roughly 40% average traffic compensation.
That network is what made the hardware brands interested. Canyon and Prestigio weren't picking Alternativa because of any single game — they were picking a games company that could credibly put their brand in front of gamers across a partner footprint.
The deal
The structure was simple: the hardware brands got category exposure inside our games and on the partner surfaces we controlled. In exchange, our branding appeared on their retail packaging and in their in-store promo materials across the CIS. The retail placement is the bit that did most of the work on reach.
What I actually had to do
- Pitch the footprint, not the games. The hardware buyer doesn't care about a specific title. They care about combined reach and demographics. The conversation works when you walk in with a platform story.
- Run the production. Branded peripherals had to be produced with Canyon. I organised that production track in parallel with the promo calendar.
- HR-brand benefit on the side. The campaign doubled as a regional HR-brand move for the company — I organised a regional event tied to the same partners in November 2017.
What I'd tell a BD hire
Think of partnerships as layers. The revenue-share tier with digital platforms is the foundation, and it's unglamorous. The visible, showy deals — retail hardware co-promos, cross-category campaigns — only work when that foundation is already in place. Don't try to skip straight to the showy deal; the pitch won't have anything real under it.
Numbers
- Co-promo reach: ~12M people
- Retail cities covered: 30+
- Partner traffic compensation from the broader network: ~40%
